Cracks in the monolith: Salmond, Sturgeon & the fight for independence
Glasgow Socialist Workers Party are hosting an online meeting:
Thursday 1 April, 6.30pm Zoom ID: 879 2402 3259
Passcode: 967537
The SNP has had an easy political ride over the last 14 years. Now, however, cracks have started to appear in what previously seemed like a political monolith.
Former Scottish National Party (SNP) leader Alex Salmond announced on Friday that he was launching the Alba Party ahead of the Holyrood election in May.
The announcement comes after a year of legal arguments following Salmond’s acquittal at the High Court in Edinburgh on charges of attempted sexual violence.
It also comes at a time of growing frustration at the SNP's timid approach to independence. That discontent has found expression in the massive All Under One Banner demonstrations and the new grassroots membership organisation Now Scotland.
Is there any fundamental difference between the SNP and the Alba Party, whether in their approach to achieve independence or other policy issues? Do socialists have to get behind either of these parties, or is there an alternative path to fighting for indyref2 and for a better society?
